A Popular Science Guide to Kidney Transplantation by the Kidney Transplantation Team at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University – A Reference for Patients with Uremia and Kidney Transplant Recipients.
Readers of history books may be familiar with the story of Bian Que performing a heart exchange surgery on Lu Gonghu and Zhao Qiying, which can be seen as an early concept of organ transplantation in ancient times. Organ transplantation was once considered science fiction. However, with advances in modern medicine, including improved surgical techniques and the development of immunosuppressants, this once-distant dream has now become a reality.
On January 7, 2022, a team of surgeons at the University of Maryland School of Medicine successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig heart into a 57-year-old male patient, marking the first successful pig-to-human heart transplant. This groundbreaking achievement has sparked discussions about the future of organ transplantation.
In the field of organ transplantation, kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end-stage kidney failure. A kidney transplant is not easy to obtain, and even after a successful procedure, it is just the first step in a lifelong journey of post-transplant care. To protect the new kidney, long-term and regular follow-up, as well as self-health management, are crucial, requiring close cooperation between doctors and patients.
The Department of Urology at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, is one of the earliest institutions in China to perform renal allotransplantation. Throughout many years of clinical practice, patients and their families have often asked us: “Should I consider kidney transplantation? What is the optimal timing for a kidney transplant? What precautions should be taken regarding medication and diet after the surgery? Can a kidney transplant recipient have children or maintain a normal sexual life?” To answer such questions, in addition to providing professional knowledge on kidney transplantation, it is essential to use clear and accessible language to ensure that patients and their families can fully understand and accept the information.
As early as 2014, the Kidney Transplantation Team at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, created the WeChat public account “Kidney Transplantation at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University” to provide kidney patients and those with uremia with regular educational content on kidney transplantation and to answer frequently asked questions.
To benefit even more kidney transplant patients, on the occasion of the 7th anniversary of the WeChat account, we carefully selected, categorized, supplemented with illustrations and real-life stories, and compiled our team’s original popular science articles into this easy-to-understand, practical, and professional kidney transplantation guide.
It took more than a year to revise and refine the manuscript through multiple stages of selection, feedback collection, peer review, and illustration refinement. This resulted in the first popular science book on kidney transplantation published by the Kidney Transplantation Team at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University.

This book describes the preparation for renal transplantation in patients with uremia, the perioperative considerations for renal transplantation, and the long-term post-transplant management. In addition, the book incorporates a combination of videos and graphics, allowing readers to access corresponding short popular science videos for each chapter by scanning the QR codes embedded in the text.
