Here's what you need to know about kidney transplants and vaccinations

In a previous wechat post, the kidney transplant team at Sun Yat-sen hospital detailed the precautions kidney transplant recipients should take when getting the flu vaccine. Many renal friends came to ask, that other vaccination should pay attention to what?

Today, Dr. Zhang gives a brief summary of vaccination for kidney transplant recipients.

The first is the general principle:

There is no direct evidence that any type of vaccination is associated with complications such as rejection after kidney transplantation. Even so, live vaccines should be avoided after kidney transplantation because of chronic immunosuppression. Because live vaccines contain more or less virus, they can cause serious infections in transplant recipients and may even be life-threatening. Therefore, after kidney transplantation, if you want to inject the vaccine, can only receive inactivated vaccine.

About the injection time:

Pre-transplant: it is recommended that all live vaccines, including but not limited to: measles, mumps, rubella, Varicella, BCG, shingles, and influenza, be administered before kidney transplantation. However, it should be noted that a minimum of 4 weeks should elapse before a transplant is performed.

Post-transplant: inactivated vaccines that can be injected after kidney transplantation include, but are not limited to, hepatitis A, pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, influenza, etc. . However, it should be injected at least 3 months after the transplant and after the renal function is stable.

Others: specific inactivated vaccines need to be administered after kidney transplantation if there is exposure to specific risk factors or risk of exposure, such as dog bites, including but not limited to: Rabies Vaccine, Neisseria meningitidis vaccine, inactivated encephalitis B vaccine, inactivated salmonella typhi vaccine, etc. .

So that’s the basics of vaccines for kidney transplant patients, and I’m looking forward to giving you a general idea about vaccines. Finally, it should be emphasized that before and after kidney transplantation, vaccination should be carried out under the joint guidance of the transplant doctor and the preventive doctor of the specific infection department.
