“Transplant Masters” Series of Academic Lectures

In order to better conduct clinical and academic exchanges on kidney transplantation, and also to convey more kidney transplantation-related information to the majority of uremia patients and kidney transplant patients, our Renal Transplant Center of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University has specially launched the “Transplant Masters” series of academic lectures.

We will regularly invite well-known experts and professors from major kidney transplant centers in China to give academic lectures in our hospital, and promptly convey the valuable experience and latest academic developments of experts and professors to everyone through WeChat public accounts. Please pay attention.

In this issue, we invited Professor Lin Tao (left), deputy director, chief physician, and doctoral supervisor of the Organ Transplant Center of West China Hospital Affiliated to West China Medical School of Sichuan University, and Professor Zhu Tongyu (right), deputy director of Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center, director of Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, and vice president of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, to present Professor Lin Tao with the honorary certificate of the “Transplant Masters” series of academic lectures. Professor Lin Tao: ABO blood type incompatible kidney transplantation

Professor Lin Tao gave us a detailed introduction to the clinical process of ABO blood type incompatible kidney transplantation and the valuable clinical experience of preoperative and postoperative patient management in the Renal Transplant Center of West China Hospital.

Thanks to various new immunosuppressants and desensitization therapy, ABO blood type incompatibility is no longer a contraindication for kidney transplantation.

The latest data show that after special preoperative pretreatment, there is no significant difference in the survival rate of transplanted kidneys between patients with ABO blood type compatible and incompatible kidney transplants.

At present, my country has not yet carried out large-scale ABO blood type incompatible kidney transplants.

If ABO blood type incompatible kidney transplants can be carried out, it means that 1/3 of kidney donors can be increased in view of the current situation of severe shortage of kidney donors in my country, so that more patients with uremia can get the opportunity to receive kidney transplants.

The first ABO incompatible kidney transplant in Shanghai

Professor Zhu Tongyu, deputy director of Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center, director of Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, and vice president of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, said:

“It will take at least ten years for patients with uremia to wait for the appearance of kidney organs with completely compatible blood types. With the advancement of modern medicine, new technologies can successfully perform kidney transplants between donors and recipients with different blood types. After accumulating rich preliminary experience, the Renal Transplant Center of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University is about to perform the first ABO incompatible kidney transplant in Shanghai.”

This week, the patient has been admitted to the hospital for pretreatment before kidney transplantation, and all work is progressing smoothly.

Let us look forward to and wish this patient a successful operation and a speedy recovery!

With organ transplantation and endoscopic urology as the main research directions, he is committed to the rational use of immunosuppressants after kidney transplantation and the improvement of long-term survival. He is good at minimally invasive laparoscopic kidney extraction for living kidney transplantation from relatives and the treatment of complex blood vessels in kidney transplantation. He is a national leader in living kidney transplantation, ABO blood type incompatible kidney transplantation, and the prevention and treatment of rejection reactions.
