Hello, all kidney friends!
After careful preparation and repeated revisions, the first topic of the kidney transplantation team of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University – Relative Donor Kidney Transplantation, is officially available!
This article is the first tweet of this topic ~ What is Relative Donor Kidney Transplantation? Please read below ~
- What is Relative Donor Kidney Transplantation?
In our body, kidneys play an important role. They act as a “filter” for blood to remove waste and excess water in the body, and can also regulate blood pressure, electrolyte balance and red blood cell production. However, renal failure can cause a series of serious symptoms and even endanger life. At this time, kidney transplantation becomes an effective treatment option for patients.
In my country, kidney transplantation is divided into cadaver organ donation (DD) and living related donor kidney transplantation (living related donor kidney transplantation) according to the source of the donor.
Cadaver kidney transplantation is to donate the kidney according to the wishes of the donor before his death and transplant it into the recipient’s body;
Living kidney transplantation is a healthy donor who gives one of his kidneys to the recipient in need.
- What kind of relationship between donor and recipient is suitable for living kidney transplantation?
According to Chinese laws and regulations[1]:
- Medical institutions that carry out living kidney transplantation are limited to those approved and designated by the National Health Commission;
- Living organ donors must be voluntary and free of charge, be over 18 years old and have full civil capacity;
- Living organ donors and recipients are limited to the following relationships: spouse (limited to those who have been married for more than 3 years or have children after marriage), direct blood relatives or collateral blood relatives within three generations.
After reading the above principles, please use your imagination:
Are Liu Xing and Liu Mei in “Home with Kids” suitable? As mother and son, they are direct blood relatives, so they meet the requirements;
What about Xiaoyanzi and Ziwei in “My Fair Princess”? They are very close, but they are not related by blood in the play, so they do not meet the requirements;
What about Zhen Huan and Guo Junwang in “The Legend of Zhen Huan”? They are lovers and do not meet the conditions for a relative kidney transplant;
There is no need to say much about Tang Monk and Sun Wukong in Journey to the West. Although Sun Wukong is Tang Monk’s loyal disciple, they are not of the same species and should be classified as xenotransplants.
The kidney transplant team of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University performed the first kidney transplant in January 1970. In 2004, taking advantage of the mature laparoscopic technology, hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy was carried out to reduce the pain and risk of living donors. Subsequently, a series of stories were created, including the 2004 “Donating a Kidney to Save Mother” donor who won the “Touching China Person of the Year” award, and the 2006 kidney transplant for Liu Ting’s mother who “went to college with her mother on her back”. In 2008, the 100th relative kidney transplant at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University was a complete success. In 2016, the kidney transplant team successfully carried out the first kidney donation and kidney transplant in Shanghai for renal cancer, and ABO blood type incompatible kidney transplant. In 2020, the kidney transplant team completed the first kidney transplant for a relative with AIDS in Shanghai. In the future, the kidney transplant team of Zhongshan Hospital will continue to climb to new heights and complete more difficult kidney transplant operations for relatives, providing strong support for patients.
