In order to better conduct clinical and academic exchanges on kidney transplantation, and also to deliver more kidney transplantation-related information to the majority of uremia patients and kidney transplant patients, our Kidney Transplant Center of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University has specially launched the "Transplantation Experts" series of academic lectures.
In the March 2021 article "Are You Suitable for Kidney Transplantation from ABO-Incompatible Relatives?" and the December article "Preoperative Knowledge of Kidney Transplantation from ABO-Incompatible Relatives", the editor introduced the recipient's indications and preoperative preparation. Today, we will continue with our third lecture: Selection of Living Donors for Kidney Transplantation from ABO-Incompatible Relatives.
Kidney shortage is the main factor limiting the development of kidney transplantation, and living-donor kidney transplantation is an effective way to alleviate the shortage. As the number of family members in China gradually decreases, blood type incompatibility between donors and recipients is becoming more common.
Let us briefly review the indications and contraindications of kidney transplantation between ABO-incompatible relatives: it is suitable for patients with end-stage renal disease, and its indications and contraindications are basically similar to those of ABO-compatible kidney transplantation. It is especially suitable for patients with uremia who are difficult to find ABO-compatible kidney sources in the short term, have poor dialysis treatment effects, or have many complications and are life-threatening and cannot accept other renal replacement therapies.
